How the inburgering practice exam a2 works.

A2 is everyday Dutch: the language you need to manage daily life. You understand short texts like letters and notices, follow simple conversations, and write short replies and forms yourself. It was the standard level under the old law (Wet inburgering 2013); under the current 2021 law B1 is standard and A2 is the B1-route fall-back after at least 600 hours. Practising at A2 keeps your work close to what the exam actually asks.

The A2 exam has four language parts: Reading (Lezen), Listening (Luisteren), Writing (Schrijven) and Speaking (Spreken). KNM is a separate part you take alongside them. Each part has its own format and timing, so it helps to practise them one at a time.

A2 is everyday Dutch: short texts, simple spoken messages, short written replies and basic conversations. It was the standard level under the old law (Wet inburgering 2013). Under the current Wet inburgering 2021 the standard level is B1, and A2 is the B1-route fall-back the gemeente can allow after at least 600 hours of study.

Four language parts, Reading (Lezen), Listening (Luisteren), Writing (Schrijven) and Speaking (Spreken), plus KNM (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij). KNM is a separate knowledge part with its own practice exam. You can practise each part on its own here.

The A2 language parts are marked as a raw score: how many of the questions you got right, so X out of Y, not a scaled 500 like the B1 route through the Staatsexamen NT2. Our practice exams show the same kind of score per part, so you can see where you stand.

Each part has its own time. A2 reading is 65 minutes, listening is 45 minutes, writing is 40 minutes, and speaking is 35 minutes. The practice exams use the same parts, so the pace stops being a surprise.

Each part costs 50 euro. All five together, including KNM, come to 250 euro. You book it through DUO. If you hold an asylum residence permit, your first two attempts per part are free. Practising here first means the format is no surprise on the day.

Practise the real task types, part by part, until the format holds no surprises. Vocabulary is usually what holds people back, not test tricks. Do a free practice exam per part to see where you stand. Then put your time into the part that needs it most.
